Serving

What else are pastors for?
And what else should everyone in the church be doing? Not only facilitating and doing works of service,
but serving one another. On at least two occasions as Jesus made his way to Jerusalem and the cross
he caught his disciples arguing about who was the greatest (Mk 9:30-37; 10:32-45). Jesus’ response was that true greatness comes through serving others, and that he himself had come to serve. And the wonderful thing is that greatness through service is open to all, even children. Bill Pollard, a ‘successful’ Christian CEO, offers this helpful reflection: “Will the leader please stand up? Not the president, but the role model. Not the highest paid person in the firm, but the risk-taker. Not the person with the most perks, but the servant. Not the person who promotes himself, but the promoter of others. Not the administrator, but the initiator. Not the taker, but the giver. Not the talker, but the listener.”
