Can you hear the song? - by Ben Bonython
Remember to stop to hear a song being sung over you.
For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” Zeph 3:17
May we hear the song of delight, gladness and love that the Lord sings over us. It is a song that calms us. The fears of the busyness, uncertainity and work of life are calmed by the love of the Lord and it is this calm that delivers true rest. Work often has a poor reputation in our minds but the song of the Lord redeems the time. Our work redeems the time too (Col 4:5, Eph 5:16) and this is how:
Work is redeemed when in faith, we work for the Lord rather than anyone else, or anything else. Work then is not for our progress or our benefit. The attitude we are called to have is to work in everything we do for the Lord. To do our best is to do our best for the Lord. The verse says ‘Whatever you do’ – that pretty much covers our 24/7 but that idea also keeps us safe in everyway! A secret to life is to remember not just the reason or purpose for what we do, but to keep a presence of mind on who we serve while we do what we do, and this changes everything!
When we fully appreciate this, we avoid become weary, both in our rest and in our work. With this in mind, the Lord encourages us further with purpose – that the good in everything we do contributes to a harvest.
Whatever promises you have been holding this year, and whatever good work you plan to do, know that there is a song being sung over you. A song that is rest for you and a song that calms. May you know the rest of the Lord, and hear His song as you serve Him in everything you do!
