Light - by Laura Duke

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him, all things were made; without him, nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. - John 1:1-5 (NIV)

Jesus is the Word of God, present at the very beginning of creation. When God spoke, Jesus, the Word, brought forth light, illuminating the vast nothingness and preparing the way for life to be brought forth, before even the sun or moon had been placed in the sky.

His birth was marked by the appearance of a new star in the sky. A tangible, visible and concrete representation of the Light entering our world. Jesus, the Brightest Star, arrived to bring His divine light and love to all of humanity and to prepare his creation for a new life.

The morning of his resurrection broke the darkness of the darkest of days. It was a dawn that dispelled the darkness of sin and death, a sunrise that continues to shine today. Through His resurrection, Jesus brings eternal light and life to everyone who believes in Him. His light is unwavering, a beacon of hope in our lives, guiding and leading us towards the light of eternity.

Christ as the Light of the world emerging out of the dark nothingness, the dark womb and the dark tomb are echoes of the same story. Christ is the light leading the creation of something new. He is the light to our feet guiding us towards our new eternal life where there will be no night and there will be no need for a sun. Christ himself will be the eternal light sustaining all of His creation.
