Do you need some wisdom? - by Ben Bonython
American Tax Office computers track 300-plus million Americans and millions of businesses. Their immense system has the capacity of 150 terabytes. But compare this to a 2010 article in Scientific American which showed the memory capacity of the human brain was the equivalent of 2,500 terabytes.
You and I are incredibly capable and therefore smart..…..aren’t we?
I was speaking with a friend about a conundrum I was facing. It seemed that with all our knowledge, wisdom and expertise, there was little light at the end of the tunnel. It seemed hopeless.
How would it help you if you were able to tap into another wisdom to get the answer you need to get through the issue you have?
Another friend reminded me about the opportunity we have in those moments to seek the Lord. In the Bible, James 1:5-8 says if any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.
I was reminded of two things. The first is obvious which is that what I often need I cannot produce or procure myself. However, the second is less obvious being that I have this innate desire to add to, modify or deny the wisdom I receive from the Lord.
The promise is that when we seek the Lord for wisdom, He will help. The difficulty is to receive that help without denying it. And the challenge is for my own pride not place my own hands around the wisdom and modify it into my own image. If we do not receive the Lord’s wisdom, the bible warns that in those moments, we can become incredibly anxious and empty-handed.
So when I seek wisdom from the Lord, I now ask for two things. The first is for the help I need, and the second is for help for my pride that I would simply receive, and not modify the wisdom of the Lord.
